Why Your DeWalt DWS780 Won’t Tilt

Posted by Power Tool Replacement Parts on Feb 25th 2026

Step 1: Check the Obvious — Is the Bevel Lock Fully Released?

This sounds simple, but it’s the most common cause.

On the back of the DWS780 is the bevel lock knob. If it isn’t fully loosened, the saw won’t tilt.

What to Do:

  • Turn the bevel lock knob counterclockwise.

  • Loosen it more than you think you need to.

  • Gently try tilting the saw left and right.

If it suddenly frees up, the issue was most likely just over-tightening. If not, let’s move on to the next solutions.

Step 2: Check for Packed Sawdust and Resin

Over time, fine sawdust and pitch buildup can harden around the bevel pivot. This can completely lock the mechanism. Some signs this could be the issue are the saw hasn’t been cleaned regularly, tilting feels stiff but not fully stuck or you hear a grinding or creaking noise when you tilt it.

How to Fix:

  1. Unplug the saw.

  2. Blow compressed air around the rear bevel pivot area.

  3. Use a nylon brush to clean hardened dust.

  4. Apply a light dry lubricant (avoid heavy grease).

Avoid spraying WD-40 directly inside unless you're prepared to fully clean afterward — it attracts more dust. Often, this alone restores movement.

Step 3: Inspect the Bevel Lock Cam Mechanism

If the knob turns but the saw won’t move, the internal cam may be jammed or damaged.

The bevel lock system works by tightening a cam against the pivot bracket. If that cam cracks, seizes or is misaligned, it can prevent tilting when loosened.

How to Check:

  • Remove the rear cover panel.

  • Inspect the cam linkage while turning the bevel lock knob.

  • Make sure it moves freely.

If it doesn’t move, the cam or linkage may need replacement.

Replacement bevel lock parts are available for the DWS780 and are typically straightforward to install with basic hand tools.

Step 4: Check for Bent or Misaligned Pivot Brackets

If the saw was dropped or transported frequently, the pivot bracket may be slightly bent. Some symptoms of this could be tilts slightly but binds, halfway side tilts, the other does not or has visible stress marks. In this case, you should check for pivot shaft alignment and ensure there’s no frame distortion.

Minor binding can sometimes be corrected by loosening and re-tightening mounting bolts evenly. Severe bending usually requires replacing the affected bracket.

Step 5: Corrosion or Rust in the Pivot Assembly

If the saw has been stored in a damp place, corrosion may be the issue.

How to Fix:

  • Apply penetrating oil to pivot points.

  • Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.

  • Gently work the bevel side to side.

  • Clean and re-lubricate with dry lube after freeing.

If rust is severe, partial disassembly may be required.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Hex wrench set

  • Compressed air

  • Nylon brush

  • Dry lubricant

  • Penetrating oil (if rusted)

Preventing This Issue in the Future

To keep your DeWalt DWS780 tilting smoothly:

  • Blow out dust weekly if heavily used

  • Avoid over-tightening the bevel lock

  • Store in a dry environment

  • Use dry lubricant instead of grease

  • Inspect the pivot annually

Regular maintenance dramatically extends the life of the bevel mechanism.

If your DeWalt DWS780 won’t tilt, don’t panic. Start simple. Clean thoroughly. Inspect the bevel lock system. Only move into part replacement if necessary.

With a little time and the right parts, you can get your saw beveling smoothly again and back to making clean, accurate cuts.
