How to Replace the Blade on a DeWalt Miter Saw (Step-by-Step)
Posted by Power Tool Replacement Parts on Jul 21st 2025
Whatever you’re working on, keeping your DeWalt miter saw in top condition is key to getting smooth, accurate cuts. Over time, even the best blades dull or get damaged — and that’s when it’s time for a replacement.
Fortunately, changing the blade on a DeWalt miter saw is a straightforward process that you can handle yourself in just a few minutes. Follow this step-by-step guide to get your saw back to peak performance.
To get started, you’ll need the replacement blade (make sure it matches your saw’s part number and model), a wrench, safety glasses and a large, clean surface to work on. Always make sure your saw is unplugged when working on it, and especially when changing the blade.
Step-by-Step: How to Replace the Blade
❑ Raise the Saw Arm and Lock It
Lift the saw arm and engage the spindle lock or saw arm lock to hold it in place. This gives you easy access to the blade.
❑ Remove the Blade Guard Screw
Use your screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the screw that holds the lower blade guard in place. Rotate or slide the guard up and out of the way.
❑ Press the Spindle Lock
DeWalt miter saws include a spindle lock button (usually located near the blade bolt). Press it in and rotate the blade slowly by hand until it locks in place.
❑ Loosen the Blade Bolt
Using the provided wrench or a socket wrench, turn the bolt clockwise to loosen it. This is because DeWalt miter saws often use a reverse-thread bolt for safety.
Remove the bolt and outer washer.
❑ Remove the Old Blade
Carefully slide the old blade off the arbor and set it aside. Be cautious — blades can still be sharp even when dull.
❑ Install the New Blade
Position the new blade on the arbor with the teeth facing down at the front of the saw. Replace the outer washer and then the blade bolt.
❑ Tighten the Blade Bolt
Hold the spindle lock again and tighten the bolt counterclockwise until it’s snug.
❑ Reattach the Blade Guard
Lower the blade guard back into position and secure it with the screw you removed earlier.
Final Check
Before plugging the saw back in or inserting the battery, spin the blade by hand to ensure it moves freely and doesn’t wobble. Reconnect power and perform a test cut with scrap wood.
When Should You Replace Your Blade?
Signs it's time to swap out your blade:
- Difficulty pushing through material
- More chipping or tear-out than usual
- Audible strain from the motor
If you're using your DeWalt miter saw regularly, consider replacing the blade every 6–12 months depending on usage and material type.
