How to Remove Nails From a Bostitch Nail Gun: A Step-by-Step Guide

Posted by Power Tool Replacement Parts on Jun 26th 2026

Few things are more frustrating than a nail stuck inside your nail gun. Whether you're working on framing, trim, roofing or finishing projects, a jammed nail can bring your work to a halt. Fortunately, removing nails from a Bostitch nail gun is usually a quick process if you follow the proper steps.

In this guide, we'll walk you through how to safely remove jammed nails from a Bostitch nail gun, explain why nail jams happen and share tips to help prevent future problems.

Why Do Nails Get Stuck in a Bostitch Nail Gun?

Several factors can cause nails to jam inside your nail gun, including:

  • Using the wrong size or type of nails
  • Bent or damaged nail strips
  • Dirt and debris inside the magazine
  • Worn or damaged driver blades
  • Improper loading of fasteners
  • Dry internal components that need lubrication

Understanding the cause of the jam can help prevent it from happening again.

Safety First

Before working on your nail gun, always:

  • Disconnect the air hose if using a pneumatic model.
  • Remove the battery if using a cordless Bostitch nail gun.
  • Take out any remaining nail strips from the magazine.
  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris.
  • Never attempt to clear a jam while the tool is powered.

Step 1: Open the Magazine

Most modern Bostitch nail guns feature a quick-release magazine or nose latch.

  1. Locate the magazine release.
  2. Slide or open the magazine according to your model.
  3. Remove any loose nails that haven't entered the firing chamber.

If the nails slide out easily, inspect them for bends or damage before reusing them.

Step 2: Open the Jam Release

Many Bostitch nailers include a tool-free jam release.

  1. Unlock the front nose latch.
  2. Swing open the nose plate.
  3. Locate the jammed nail.

If your model requires screws to remove the nose plate, use the appropriate hex wrench or screwdriver supplied with the tool.

Step 3: Remove the Jammed Nail

Using needle-nose pliers, grip the stuck nail firmly and pull it straight out. If necessary, gently wiggle it free. Avoid forcing the nail sideways, as this can damage the driver channel or magazine. If multiple nails are wedged together, remove them one at a time.

Step 4: Inspect the Driver Blade

Once the nail is removed, inspect the driver blade. Look for chips, cracks, bent tips and excessive wear.

A damaged driver blade is one of the most common causes of recurring nail jams. If you notice wear, replacing the driver assembly can restore proper performance.

Step 5: Clean the Magazine

Dust, sawdust, and adhesive buildup can restrict nail movement.

Use compressed air, a soft brush and a clean rag to remove debris from the magazine rails, nose assembly and nail channel.

Avoid using excessive oil inside the magazine, as it can attract dirt.

Step 6: Lubricate Pneumatic Models

If you own a pneumatic Bostitch nail gun add 2–3 drops of pneumatic tool oil into the air fitting before use. Cycle the gun several times after reconnecting the air hose. Proper lubrication reduces friction and extends the life of internal components. Battery-powered models should only be lubricated according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

When Should You Replace Parts?

If your Bostitch nail gun continues to experience jams despite cleaning and maintenance, worn replacement parts may be the issue.

Common replacement parts include:

  • Driver blades
  • Feed springs
  • Magazine assemblies
  • Nose pieces
  • Trigger valves
  • O-rings
  • Bumpers
  • Pistons

Replacing worn components can often restore your nail gun's performance without the cost of purchasing a new tool.
