How to Change a Small Briggs & Stratton Engine Air Filter

Posted by Power Tool Replacement Parts on Nov 3rd 2025

A clean air filter is essential for keeping your small Briggs and Stratton engine running efficiently. Dirty or clogged air filters restrict airflow, reduce power and can cause engine damage over time. Fortunately, changing an air filter on most small Briggs and Stratton engines is a straightforward task that takes just a few minutes. Here is your complete step-by-step guide.

Tools You'll Need

Screwdriver (Phillips or flathead, depending on your model)

Clean rag or paper towels

New air filter compatible with your engine model such as the Briggs & Stratton 792105 Air Filter or one of our multi-packs like the Briggs & Stratton 4241 Air-Filter (5 X 793569)

Step-by-Step Replacement Process

Step 1: Prepare Your Engine

Turn off the engine and allow it to cool completely. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting during maintenance. This safety step is crucial when working around the air intake system.

Step 2: Locate the Air Filter Housing

Find the air filter housing, typically a rectangular or round cover on the side or top of the engine. Most small Briggs and Stratton engines have either a plastic cover held by clips or a metal housing secured with screws.

Step 3: Remove the Air Filter Cover

For clip-style housings: Press the plastic clips and lift off the cover

For screw-secured housings: Remove the screws (usually 1-3 screws) and set them aside safely

For wing nut systems: Turn the wing nuts counterclockwise to remove

Step 4: Remove the Old Air Filter

Carefully lift out the old air filter. Take note of how it sits in the housing, the pleated side typically faces the engine, while the foam pre-cleaner (if present) faces outward toward the cover. Common filters like the Briggs & Stratton 792105 Air Filter have a specific orientation for optimal performance.

Step 5: Clean the Housing

Use a clean rag to wipe out any debris, grass clippings, or dirt from the air filter housing. A clean housing ensures your new filter seals properly and prevents contamination.

Step 6: Install the New Air Filter

Place your new air filter in the housing exactly as the old one was positioned. Ensure it sits flush against all edges of the housing to create a proper seal.

Step 7: Reassemble the Housing

Replace the air filter cover and secure it with clips, screws or wing nuts. Make sure the cover sits flat against the housing to maintain a tight seal.

Step 8: Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the spark plug wire and start your engine. It should run smoother and with improved power compared to before the filter change.
