What Type of Oil Should You Use for a Briggs & Stratton Push Mower?

Posted by Power Tool Replacement Parts on Dec 4th 2024

If you own a Briggs & Stratton push mower, keeping it in top working condition involves regular maintenance, and one of the most critical aspects is using the right oil. Choosing the appropriate oil ensures that the engine operates efficiently, stays well-lubricated, and avoids unnecessary wear. So, what type of oil should you use? Let’s break it down.

Briggs & Stratton Oil Recommendations

Briggs & Stratton typically recommends SAE 30 oil for most push mowers when operating in temperatures above 40°F (4°C). However, depending on the climate and your specific model, other options might be suitable:

  • SAE 30: Best for warmer climates (above 40°F). This is the standard choice for most small engines, offering excellent protection during typical mowing conditions.
  • SAE 10W-30: Provides better cold-weather starting in temperatures ranging from 0°F to 100°F but may result in slightly higher oil consumption in hotter conditions.
  • Synthetic SAE 5W-30: Ideal for a wide range of temperatures, from -20°F to over 100°F. This oil type offers improved performance in extreme conditions and reduces oil consumption.
  • Vanguard 15W-50: Perfect for continuous use or high-temperature applications, such as commercial-grade mowers.

Please note: Briggs & Stratton has recently modified its engine oil recommendations to state that you may now use a synthetic 5W30 or 10W30 oil in all temperature ranges.

How to Choose the Right Oil for Your Push Mower

  1. Check the Operator’s Manual: Your push mower’s manual is your best guide for specific recommendations. It will indicate the type and grade of oil suitable for your mower model. If you've misplaced the manual, most manufacturers, including Briggs & Stratton, offer online versions.
  2. Consider the Temperature Range: The climate plays a significant role in determining the right oil:
    • For mild to hot weather: SAE 30.
    • For cooler temperatures or year-round use: Synthetic SAE 5W-30.
  3. Usage and Environment: If you mow regularly or in challenging conditions (e.g., long grass, hilly terrain), synthetic oil is often the better choice due to its superior performance and longevity.

Oil Capacity of Briggs & Stratton Push Mowers

Most Briggs & Stratton push mowers have an oil capacity of around 15 to 20 ounces (approximately 0.47 to 0.59 liters). Be sure to avoid overfilling, as this can lead to engine problems. Use the dipstick to check the oil level after filling.

Steps for Changing the Oil in Your Push Mower

- Gather Supplies: You’ll need the correct oil, a drain pan, a funnel, a clean cloth, and possibly a wrench or socket set.

- Warm Up the Engine: Run the mower for a few minutes to warm up the oil, making it easier to drain.

- Drain the Oil: Tip the mower onto its side (with the air filter facing up to prevent contamination), or use the dedicated drain plug if available.

Tip: You can also use a kit to extract the oil with a pump, as shown in the video below. This kit is available to purchase on our website.

- Refill with New Oil: Using a funnel, pour in the recommended oil slowly, checking the level with the dipstick. Ensure the oil is at the "Full" mark.

- Dispose of Used Oil Properly: Take the used oil to a recycling center or an auto parts store that accepts oil disposal.

Final Thoughts

Using the correct oil for your Briggs & Stratton push mower is crucial for its performance and longevity. Whether you opt for SAE 30, 10W-30, or synthetic oils, always consult your mower’s manual and consider the climate and workload. Regular oil checks and changes will ensure smooth operation, saving you from costly repairs down the road.

You can also consult Briggs & Stratton’s oil finder tool to make sure you are getting what’s needed for your engine.

With proper maintenance and the right oil, your Briggs & Stratton mower will keep your lawn looking pristine for years to come!
